Job Description

  Rate of Pay: $45,281.60 - $51,654.99
Status: Open Until Filled

This is a position within the Building Inspection division of the Public Works Department.  The employee is responsible for conducting general building code inspections and may provide specialized inspections in one of the following areas: Electrical, H.V.A.C or Plumbing.  The assigned area of specialization will require more in-depth inspections in the assigned area, as well as additions and repairs to existing buildings within the City of Marietta to ensure compliance with state and local building codes and ordinances.

 
  • Performs both field and office work in the inspection of new and remodel construction for residential and commercial buildings to ensure compliance with state and local laws, codes and ordinances. Schedules inspections from contractors and the public and responds to inquiries concerning scheduled inspections.
  • Performs detailed inspections in the assigned area of specialty (electrical, H.V.A.C., or plumbing) to include plan and specification review, and any on site tests needed to determine code compliance. 
  • Responds to concerns or complaints from contractors and citizens regarding building or related code violations, inspections or reports of non-permitted building construction.
  • Research and review existing codes and ordinances and stays informed of new codes and ordinances.
  • Notifies and advises contractors when code violations are found.
  • Maintains records of inspections conducted and ensures that city records of inspections conducted are updated as needed.
  • Performs other related inspection and administrative duties as required or assigned from Supervisor.


Job Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years college course work in a related construction technology field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in one of the following areas of building trades: Electrical, Plumbing or H.V.A.C. Applicants without related college course work will need 2 years additional experience beyond the minimum specified above.
  • Georgia non-restricted license in the specified area is an optimum requirement in lieu of certification requirement.
  • ICC certifications as a Building, Electrical, Mechanical or Plumbing Inspector is required.
  • Must be able to conduct general building inspections outside of specialty area and general knowledge of state and local codes and ordinances related to building codes.
  • Must have skill in reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications and blueprints.
  • Ability to detect and locate structural, mechanical, equipment or material deficiencies, and or substandard work.
  • Must have general knowledge of materials, methods and practices in all three areas of inspections and considerable knowledge in the assigned area of specialization.
  • Must have excellent communication skills in dealing with the public, contractors and others involved in the inspection process. Ability to enforce all related building codes firmly but tactfully.
  • Ability to compose business letters requiring basic word processing and writing skills.
  • Ability to use a PC and MS Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook, for communications, file maintenance and record retrieval.
  • Approximately 20% of the work is performed in an office environment with primary sitting and intermittent walking. Approximately 80% of work is performed on-site making inspections requiring walking, standing, stooping, climbing of stairs or ladders, crawling, and maneuvering in tight closed spaces.  Exposure to falling objects, heavy equipment, rough, uneven or slippery terrain and other hazards of construction sites are common while making field inspections.
  • GSWCC Level 1A Certified Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspector or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Maintain professions associations memberships.
